Exfoliation 101The benefits and how to get the most out of your exfoliator.Exfoliating is the best way to keep your skin soft and looking young. Here are some tips on getting the most out of your exfoliator and the benefits it can have.
Looking for the key to healthy looking skin? So many companies bombard you today with the latest technology, chemical peels, and jars of youth to make your skin look younger longer. But the real key to keeping that fresh look could be as simple as exfoliating on a regular basis. Here are some facts you should know. Instant benefits:Immediately after using an exfoliator on your skin, it will glow and feel smooth and soft. That's because you have buffed away the thin layer of dead skin cells that accumulates throughout the day. Buffing this dead skin away will keep it from clogging pore s which can lead to blackheads, whiteheads and acne. Buffing away the dead skin cells (along with excess dirt and oil) can also help reduce or prevent the appearance of fine lines by gently removing that first layers of skin. Long-term benefits:It should be no secret. Clean skin that has been treated properly throughout it's life will look young and healthy as it ages. There are some things we may not be able to control about our appearance, but this is one area we can really have an effect on. Whether it's daily or weekly, the removal of dead skin cells, excess dirt and oil will keep your skin glowing and the fine lines at bay. It can also help with acne since it works at keeping pores clean (one of the main culprit of acne). When and how often to use:Your skin type will define how often you should be using an exfoliator on your face. If you have very dry skin, it is good to remove any flakiness, but don't over do it because it can cause major irritation. Opt to use a gentle exfoliator once a week. But if you have oily skin it can be beneficial to use a gentle exfoliator once a day to make sure that oil can't build up. Normal or combination skin? Try just using it twice a week or every other day because you don't want to cause any irritation. Even once a week will result in softer, smoother skin. You can also make changes depending on the season. For instance, in the summer with the heat and the humidity (not to mention smog and other pollution) exfoliating more often will help you keep that dewy glow, and not look dirty. How abrasive should it be?:Generally speaking, you should save the intensive exfoliators for your trips to the dermatologist. But there are plenty of gentle exfoliators out there in drugstores that don't cost a fortune. Even something as simple and extra-gentle as exfoliating cloths could be the answer for you (Olay makes a great daily exfolaiting cloth). A very inexpensive option that usually makes the top list of many beauty lovers is the St. Ives Apricot Exfoliator. You can also find organic or all natural products that use coarse sugars and fragrance oils to lift away dead skin and dirt. Or if you want, head to a department store and search for the best higher-end product for your needs. The bottom line, start gently and slowly until you find the best exfoliation routine for you.
