Find the best clothing for body type. The upper figured body shape can be difficult to dress, but with a few pointers, the body type will look proportionate.

The upper figured shape has a body type that is also considered top heavy. When weight is gained for this body type most of the excess weight will go straight to the chest. When figuring a women’s body shape by a body measurement, the upper figured body shape will have a bust/waist ratio greater than a 1.25 and a waist/hip ratio greater than .75.

Clothes to Avoid:

Button-down shirts are not the friend of a top heavy girl. The buttons will pull, causing big gaps in between and are generally uncomfortable. It is possible with some alterations to pull off a button down shirt but do not expect to get one off the rack and fit perfectly.

Avoid bold prints and colors on the top half of the body. The attention is already drawn to the top half so it is not necessary to add more attention.

Skinny jeans also should be avoided. Because the legs are already slender, Skinny jeans will add more emphasis to that as well as create a look that you are sitting on pins.

Wardrobe Tips:

  • If anyone needed a fitted bra (and we all do!) it is the top dominant women. Visit a professional bra fitting boutique, the professionals there will help find the fit that is appropriate no matter what the size. If it has been more than two years since the last fitting, run down to the local bra store and get an update! The chest should look perky which will help give a slimmer appearance.
  • Few women can pull off the long cardigan and tights look but the upper figured body shape has the perfect silhouette for this look. Since there are no hips to pull at the cardigan, the sweater will fall perfectly. Plus with great, slim legs, leggings are perfect way to show them off. The best way to accessorize this outfit is with a decorated boot.
  • Boot-cut pants or a full skirt is the best way to balance the top part of the body. Boot cup pants and full skirts will help add much needed volume to the tiny hips and legs. Volume equals curves which will help give the illusion of having a perfect hour glass figure.
  • Bold patterns and colors on the bottom half of the body. This will help draw the eye and give more of a focus to the hips and take the focus away from the chest.
