Before heading to the salon for a makeover, learn how an effective consultation can result in a great haircut.

Getting a great haircut is more than just luck. A thorough consultation is the foundation to an excellent haircut. By being educated in the consultation process, a client can help the provide the stylist with the right information to get the best service.

Know Yourself

When deciding on a hairstyle, it is important to be aware of the hair type and basic face shape. Hair is either coarse, medium, or fine. Different hair textures each have styles that they work best with. In addition, some haircuts are more suited to certain face shapes. These shapes include round, oval, heart shaped, or rectangular, just to name a few. The most flattering haircut will balance out the face and make the shape appear more oval.

Take a Picture

Next, find a picture that will give the stylist a clear idea of what type of haircut is desired. When looking for a photo, pay attention to the face shapes, and try to choose a shape that is closest to your own. Once a photo is selected, block the face out and look at the hair. Be sure to note if the photo has some elements that are not desired, such as really short bangs. Your stylist will be able to customize the haircut to your specifications.

Get Acquainted

Tell the stylist about yourself. Your lifestyle will affect how you wear your hair. Let them know what you do for a living, what you like or don't like about your hair, how much time you can devote to your style, and what products you typically use. Use the photo to help describe the haircut that you are interested in, and be open to the stylist's suggestions.

Usually if a stylist tries to steer a client away from a hairstyle, it is because it would not work well with the hair's natural texture and would require too much maintenance. Alternately, if the style will not flatter the face shape, the stylist might make suggestions as well. When telling how much length you want to have removed, show the stylist with your fingers or point to a spot on the hair.

Leave as little to guesswork for the stylist as possible. During the haircut, feel free to ask questions and offer feedback about the cut. The stylist will be happy that you want to be involved in the process and will put forth their best effort.

Find a the right hair stylist by asking friends and coworkers who they use. In many cases, price is not an indicator of the quality of service. Many salons in the upper price bracket are charging extra for a beautiful atmosphere. However, it is important to pay attention to the stylist's demeanor, professionalism and willingness to listen.

Bad haircuts can cost a lot or a little, and the same can be said about good haircuts. Open communication both during the consultation and throughout the haircut process will ensure a successful service.
