Lets face it, all contestants in beauty pageants want to win the crown and the job that comes with it. Here's how to do it.

Many pageant contestants are frustrated after losing a pageant, they want to know what they did wrong or what the judges didn't like. These pageant tips can help contestants focus on whats important in order to win a beauty pageant or a scholarship competition.

Inner Beauty Counts in Winning a Beauty Pageant

  • As cliche' as it may seem, it's important to show the judges a genuine personality. Even though most of the competitions are on stage, confidence will shine through to the judges.
  • Prepare weeks in advance of the pageant date. Start planning work outs, wardrobe, conduct mock interviews and so on. A well-prepared contestant has less stress the day of the pageant and may perform better than a contestant rushing around taking care of things at the last minute.
  • Don't act like a pageant girl seen in a movie. Girls who win titles are almost always the most genuine and well-prepared girls in the competition. Winners do not walk with an exaggerated arched back or wave with a cupped hand. Despite the stereotypes, judges appreciate a contestant who can present her true personality during competition.

Clothes, Presentation, Walk and Makeup

  • Don't take a risk with a dress. The evening gown competition is not about the dress, it's about the young woman who's wearing it. A leopard print dress with feathers and a countless amount of sequins is going to be hard for a judge to take in during 20 seconds of competition. Find a gown that showcases style and personality without taking away from natural beauty.
  • Brush up on grammatical skills and current events. During an interview, a judge wants to be assured the winner they select will not say something silly during a media interview or around a large group of listeners.
  • A contestant should walk in a flattering way. Find a previous pageant winner in the area and see if they are willing to give free tips on stage walking. A bad walk can cause a loss of points very quickly. Generally, former pageant winners will help pageant contestants at little or no cost.
  • Get makeup tips from a professional. Stage makeup and everyday makeup are two very different things. Many department stores offer free applications at makeup counters. A department store artist will probably share their knowledge for little or no cost.

Look After Yourself Throughout the Competition

  • Eat healthier and work out. Even the most athletic contestant still has room for improvement. This will help you feel more confident onstage during all phases of competition, not just swimsuit.
  • A more expensive wardrobe does not guarantee a crown. Many pageant winners make news after a pageant because of how little they spent on a wardrobe. Pick items that flatter the figure and showcase personal style.
  • It's very important to have fun. Judges can tell when a contestant is happy to be there. Smile, make friends and remember that the worst mistakes are best covered with a quick laugh and a smooth recovery.
