Make sure the time you spend on your face is well spent. Is your makeup still flattering, or are you just in a makeup rut?

Is your makeup adding beauty to your look, or are you just doing the same thing every day over and over out of habit? Beware falling into a makeup rut. Even small changes may be needed on a day-to-day basis.

The liquid eyeliner you used yesterday for your lunch in a dark restaurant will be overkill at an afternoon in the park. Likewise, your high school look may not be serving you as well in your 30s.

Seasonal changes also call for different colors. Your foundation especially should change from winter to summer. Even if you regularly use sunblock, the shade of your face will change from occasional sun exposure, and your overall look in a warm climate may call for a deeper shade.

Foundation is tricky to get right. If you're not happy with the shade you bought, take it back and exchange it for another. You can also keep a darker and lighter shade, then use a fresh container to blend your own shade. Messy, but probably more accurate.

Start small. Experiment with new lipstick colors rather than the same old shade everyday. If you recognize a need for change but can't identify what to do, seek professional help.

Quality cosmetic lines often have free makeup lessons in hopes of enticing you to buy their product. If you're happy with the results, it's a fair trade. When you're really at a loss, less is better.

Too much of a bad thing can look plain clownish. And a lighter hand as we age is always more flattering. Keep a fresh eye on your mirror, and you will ensure that your makeup really is a time investment in beauty.

Jill Florio :
My makeup rut seems to be extreme. I use lipstick daily and that's it. When I want to go out, I grab the eyeshadow and blush. How very creative of me.

I know I can do better but have always just looked pretty without it. Now that I am getting older, though, I am thinking of seeing a facialist and getting professional advice. What do you think?

Chrissy Dolezal :
Seeking some advice might be beneficial to you since you are not an avid make up girl. You could also check out some magaizines too...a little bit less expensive and they have some great tips in there as well. Being a Mary Kay consultant I would of course recommend coming to me...but that's just my personal opinion! I've never had a make up rut. I use everything under the sun. But I would bow down and worship the inventor of cosmetics if I could. And if you saw me without make up you would know why!
