Chloe Sevigny is one of the latest celebrities to embark on a fashion line - celebrity designers since 2003 include Stefani, Parker, Jovovich-Hawk and Sienna Miller.
Chloë Sevigny is the latest celebrity to embark on her own fashion line. She’s teamed with store owner Humberto Leon to design clothes for ,Opening Ceremony, a New York and Los Angeles-based store. Her spring collection was unveiled during the same week as New York's Fashion Week, which may have led to it being overlooked by fashion news at the time.
According to an interview Sevigny gave to Teen Vogue, part of her influence was the preppy look of her upbringing in Darien, Connecticut. That explains the sweet dresses, blouses and skirts seen in the collection. But she also added a little edge to the looks by shortening skirts and adding black tights or other slight rock influences. Most of the pieces are refreshingly simple with clean, smooth lines. The lack of embellishments doesn’t equal low prices, however, as pieces range from $150 to almost $600. Will the pieces fly out of stores? (In addition to Opening Ceremony, the line is supposed to be sold at Barneys and perhaps other boutiques.)
Here are four other celebrities who have staked their claim in the crowded industry:
L.A.M.B. has become such a fashion staple that it’s often difficult to remember when Stefani was “just” a singer. Stefani created the line in 2003 and it now encompasses clothing, bags, fragrance and the Japanese-inspired Harajuku Lovers line. The latest L.A.M.B. collection was an audience hit at Spring Fashion Week in Bryant Park.
When Parker had the idea to make her fashion line affordable, she meant it: every item in the Bitten clothing line costs $20 or less. Bitten is sold exclusively at the East Coast store Steve & Barry’s. Choices range from cocktail dresses to jeans and tanks. She didn’t forget bags and shoes, either!
Milla Jovovich & Carmen Hawk – Jovovich-Hawk
Model/actress Jovovich and model Carmen Hawk are frequently interviewed in magazines regarding their fashion line. They started it in 2003 with the belief, according to their website, “feel good, look great, feel bad, look great” (they later go on to say that clothes should be comfortable). Their line is full of feminine dresses for spring 2008.
Sienna Miller and her older sister, Savannah, have created a clothing line that looks suspiciously similar to Sienna’s style (though many designers are equally guilty) The clothes include dresses and coats tied with belts, short dresses paired with oversized sweaters and menswear-inspired shirts with skinny pants. FYI: The odd-sounding name is the date of Sienna’s birthday.
Which celebrities will create their own fashion lines in 2008? Only time will tell!
