No matter what make-up look you'd like to achieve, you can always get the most out of your eyelashes. It's a basic and simple way to really make your eyes and your eye make-up pop! Here's how to get the best out of your lashes.

Choosing A Mascara

There are many different brands and mascara formulas out there. Here's how to choose the right one for you:

  • Price: Don't judge a mascara by its price. The formulas of drugstore brands are almost identical to those of higher priced brands. Start with the inexpensive mascaras and work your way up until you find one that suits you.
  • Small Brushes: Often make-up companies will try to sell you on the idea that bigger brushes mean bigger lashes, but it usually means a bigger mess. Small brushes mean less product and an easier application because you can get right to every last lash to make the most of them! Especially for those of you who have short or sparse lashes, a small brush will be your greatest tool.
  • Mascara Colour: Mascara colour is a personal preference but black is universally flattering and can be worn with a softer day look and a more dramatic evening look. If you prefer a natural look or have fair lashes, try a brown or a dark brown mascara.

Curl Your Lashes

Curling your lashes makes applying mascara easier, your lashes look fuller and your eyes look bigger. Here's how to do it:

  • Using an eyelash comb or a clean mascara wand, comb your eyelashes so that there are no tangles.
  • Open the eyelash curler and fit your upper eyelashes between the pads. You want to get as close to the base of your lashes as you can without pinching your skin. The key is to go slowly and gently until you get a feel for it.
  • Slowly close the pads around your lashes and squeeze the curler for a few seconds. Don't squeeze too hard or for too long or you'll get a sharp dent in your lashes. If this happens you can squeeze your lashes in between your thumb and your forefinger – the heat from your skin will soften the curl. Also, you can angle the curler so the bottom moves away from your face. This creates a more pronounced curl.
  • Move the curler along your lashes gradually, squeezing as you go. You want a soft, gradual curl. Comb through your lashes again before you apply mascara.

Applying MascaraHere's a very basic method of applying mascara.

  • Remove the wand from the tube of mascara. Do not pump the wand into the tube to get more mascara on the brush – this pushes air into the tube and dries out your product. Instead swirl the brush inside the tube.
  • Using a piece of tissue, blot the brush gently. This removes excess mascara, preventing clumps, and enables you to build layers of mascara for a more flattering, dramatic effect.
  • Start applying mascara by placing the brush at the very base of the lashes. Rub the wand back and forth as you move it along the lashes – this gives you a thicker-looking lashline. When you get halfway out, stroke the wand straight along the lashes to lengthen them.
  • Comb through your lashes and allow them to dry for 30 seconds before adding a second layer.
  • If you happen to get mascara on your skin, don't worry. Simply let it dry and it will just flake off. If you try to wipe it away when it is still wet, you'll only make a bigger mess! If you like, any smudges that get along your lashline can work to your advantage. Just smudge it in and you've got eyeliner!
  • Remember, a few thin coats of mascara look much more natural than one heavy coat, so use restraint!
  • Unless you've got very fair eyelashes, you don't need to apply mascara to your lower lashes. It's a dramatic look, so save it for evening! If you've got fair lashes, however, you may want to use the same mascara that you used on your top lashes on your bottom ones.
