Beach or Poolside Beauty Tips

Swimming is a fun part of summer but, depending on your habits, can be hazardous to your beauty efforts. Whether you swim in a pool, the ocean or a lake, it's simple enough to look good while having fun.

Hair can be an issue for swimmers. I don't know about you but I've never been one to wear a swim cap. This may solve the problem of protecting and keeping your hair dry, but unless you're in a swimmers' competition, you're going to look a little dorky.

Chlorine in swimming pools can wreck your hair (especially color) so rinse it out immediately. Swimming in salt water can actually dry your hair in a nice wave, but sun can be just as damaging to hair as skin.

Spray on a leave-in conditioner with sunscreen. Comb your hair while it's still wet so you don't wind up with a tangled mess. And please don't forget hair removal along your bikini line. No one wants to see that peeking out.

Makeup. This is the time to go makeup-free or wear a very little bit, such as mascara and lip tint. Mascara should be waterproof, and lip balm (tinted or not) should include an SPF of at least 15. If you're prone to fever blisters, the sun can bring them on, so use protection.

Jewelry. Obviously, you don't need it, but maybe you're at a swim party, or on a date and want to look a bit special. Limit it to small earrings, like hoops. Jewelry can be hazardous while swimming (attracting sharks for one), can get hot against your skin in the sun, and too much bling on the beach just looks silly.

Your combed hair, small hoop earrings, tinted lips and light mascara will make you look pretty for an after swim drink. Toss on a sundress and sandals and you're ready for anything.
